On March 26, 2015, Women in Art Initiative hosted a studio visit session with Co-Director of A.I.R. Gallery, Jenn Dierdorf, as part of the celebrative events of the national Support Women Artists Now Day (SWAN Day).
Two Penn MFA students (Kaitlin Pomerantz and Natessa Patrice Amin) participated in the studio visit, introducing their works in progress, artistic interests and inspirations to Ms. Dierdorf one by one. Later Ms. Dierdorf sat down with these emerging women artists to share her experience and advice on how to start a career and succeed in the visual arts field. She particularly pointed out that women artists tended to step back, afraid of asking for more. She encouraged women artists to stay active in the arts scene, have the confidence of asking directly for a studio visit, and never compromise easily.
Later, two Penn undergraduate Fine Arts majors, Gina DeCagna and Léa Kichler, joined the conversation. Ms. Dierdorf introduced some of the artist residency programs and grant opportunities to encourage to apply and actively seek resources.
The studio visit aimed to provide Penn female art students the opportunity to engage with and learn from an art gallery director and artist who is dedicated to promote women artists through her work.
In the future, Women in Art Initiative will continuously invite art professionals for small group conversation and studio visit in order to provide Penn female art students with extra resources for critique and professional advice.A.I.R. Gallery Back to Past Events
